Mubi is a trio of baskets by italian designer Elena Salmistrao. Mubi is part of our Designer Editions, where we bring together bold contemporary voices from around the world to explore how tradition can evolve through dialogue- transforming both design and craft in the process. Each collaboration expands what is possible: for the artisans, for the materials, and for the forms themselves. Designers challenge us to see our craft anew — to stretch, refine, and evolve. In return, we challenge them to design within context: to respond to place, to adapt to constraint, to create through the tools, rhythms, and realities of Malawi.
Elena brought her distinct language into our world, drawing out and transforming the essense of People of the Sun.
“Mubi is a collection of baskets that I envisioned as small architectures of lightness. Their circular shapes, reminiscent of little skirts that seem to float, convey dynamism and movement while remaining still. I wanted to explore the apparent contradiction between solidity and fragility, between structure and dance, attempting to capture the grace inherent in the manual gesture of weaving. Each basket thus becomes not only a container but also a poetic image, almost a domestic sculpture that tells the stories of those who created it.”
